Coming Out...
Posted in IPTV, News on May 3rd, 2007. By Maren Hermans.
What started as a secret project, now came out of the closet: and jumped directly into the big pool. Joost, the interactive software that makes it possible for users to create their own, customized television program and watch it in high quality on their computers, opened up its club: The beta try out version is (Via Digg) now open for more visitors.
Behalf of this being a nice gesture, it is the first step of little Joost to come out of age and play with the big ones. More viewers are going to witness the new partnership of Joost with Coca Cola, Nestle, Nike, General Motors, Procter and Gamble and Visa (to name only a few). And also to participate, as viewers are not inactive couch potatoes anymore, but active peers. ” For this work ”, said David Clark, Joost’s Vice President for Global Advertising, ” the bargain between the user and the advertiser needs to be reinvented.” Viewers are constructing their own program, where they can either “Just do it”or celebrate “The coke site of life”. Or simply come out with their own slogan.
The partnership of Joost with the biggest brands is not surprising, but it actually disturbs the romantic, yet exciting idea of a secret project called Venice, developed by the best people in business in several European countries. European Romanticism now goes American, the nerd gets the cheerleader.
YouTube to have Ads Soon...
Posted in IPTV, News on May 3rd, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
Last week at the Ad.Tech conference in San Francisco, Suzie Reider, head of advertising for YouTube, told her audience (Via Digg) that YouTube is experimenting with pre-roll and post-roll advertising spots. Ads will start to appear in YouTube videos as soon as this summer.
“We’re looking at executions like a very quick little intro preceding a video, then the video, then a commercial execution on the backside of the content,” Ms. Reider said.
Although Ms. reider description doesn’t sound neither innovative or appealing, she also pointed out that they don’t want to recreate the current TV model, based on 30 seconds commercial spots. It’s strange then, that they are looking into pre & post roll ads, maybe the closest translation to Internet video of the current TV advertising model.

Microsoft Silverlight Released...
Posted in Long Tail, News on May 3rd, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
Microsoft Silverlight, a technology for animations, vector graphics and video playback was released under a 1.0 beta version just this week. To put it simply, Silverlight is Microsoft’s version of Adobe’s Flash, the software behind countless website services and features, for example YouTube’s streaming video and upload tools.
This TechCrunch article highlights why Silverlight is important. In Arrington’s words: it’s important “to anyone who is thinking about where the web will evolve” because “Silverlight will be the platform of choice for developers who build rich Internet applications”.
