Catching the light fantastic (Photography)

MCH has been featuring several unique profiles that we believe to be very inspiring, from the moment their work has such a powerful impact than can be considered nearly a trend in itself.

From this week and for the following month, we will center in very specific visual tendencies and how different creators approach them.

Light affects colors and shapes. We catch light in illustrations, moving images and stills. We can capture light in many different ways, and for varied objectives, we can even make light steal the show.

Today, we observe an interesting tendency, influenced by the new possibilities digital cameras offer (like directly shooting the sun) as well as by the whimsical imaginary that Jean-Pierre Jeunet proposed with Amélie 6 years a go (and that today has a wide presence in all sorts of media).

This tendency has a lot to do with light being used along with high contrast and saturation in order to get closer to what we believe is the real vision, although trying to capture what we really see turns into trying to capture the feelings associated with that view. That is, images with a mood.

For this reasons what we find when viewing images that try to “catch the light fantastic” are personal, everyday captures; of the little joys of life; with light exaggerating the greens and the yellows, blinding our vision of the full landscape… but gifting us with almost-touchable senses.

  1. Update: photographer Mareen Fischinger recommends this photoset modeled by her (shooted by Jahonnes) based on the tendency described in this post.

    Worth giving it a look!
