What is the internet, if not a narcissist’s dream come true? Wired is asking its readers this week. That is a good question, and its subject is surely accompanied by another dream: the nightmare of the professional journalist. (more…)

For newspapers to survive...
Posted in Publishing, News on March 27th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
With the announcement of InfoWorld’s print edition closing down the idea that newspapers and magazines are dying was once again the topic of discussion in many blogs last week. We highlight however Doc Searls and Dave Winer’s ideas (Via Digg) on how can newspapers better adapt to the challenges the Internet is pressing on them. To summarize the most important points: reform journalism school, embrace the best bloggers, look for citizen reporters and use links, especially outside the paper for example to local bloggers or even competing papers.
News, Journalists & Citizens...
Posted in Citizen Journalism, Publishing, Reports, News on March 13th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
According to the State of the News Media report (Via Micro Persuasion), the news industry needs a new economic model. Last year’s decline in newspaper circulation seems to confirm this. Some newspapers are doing better than others, for example the Financial Time’s integrated newsroom seems to be paying off and the USA Today new website is attracting thousands of members. All in all, out of all the traditional media outlets, and as we reported before, it’s the publishing industry who is leading in innovation on news. Journalists themselves, Cyberjournalist reports, are starting to make TV.
On the other hand, Citizen Journalists, or at least French Citizen Journalists, seemed to have it harder: France approved a law making it illegal for non journalists to capture and distribute videos of violent acts. Later on, upon reading the actual text of this law, Lost Remote reader confirmed the law was limited to acts of violence done in order to be filmed and broadcast. It’s surprising though that of all countries France passed a law that proposes a “certification system” to label “government approved sources of information”.
Publishers leading video online...

The publishing industry is leading the way in video online, and thriving on on the net. This is what several blogs such as Lost Remote, Micro Persuasion or Cyberjournalist pointed out last week. And just as last week we highlighted some of the New York Times efforts in this area, several news items reinforced the idea that newspapers are indeed leading video online. For example, the Wall Street Journal tools for citizens or Time’s determination to produce video contents under their brand name.

Will the New York Times be printed in 5 years?...
Posted in Publishing on February 12th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
As the world’s oldest newspaper goes digital, the New York Times Chairman doesn’t know (and doesn’t care!) if they will be printing his newspaper in 5 years.
The New York times is doing tons of interesting things such as their Microsoft-New York Times e-reader project, TimesReader, their MyTimes website or more recently their user created video content initiative.
So will they be printing the New York Times in 5 years? As Marc Rullo puts it (commenting the Lost Remote article), probably not, they won’t be printing it. You will, if you so choose.
Ideas from the publishing industry...
Posted in Publishing, News on February 4th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
Smart Mobs recently highlighted a couple of ideas and an experiment from the publishing sector that may be applied to other areas of the media and communication industry. When imagining how to apply those ideas on to another medium, such as on TV, we can’t help but think about Chris Anderson’s Long Tail point of view, even though not everyone will agree The Long Tail can actually be applied to TV…
