European TV Consumption Online

An study conducted by Motorola shows that 45% of European broadband users have watched at least some TV shows online. How many of those broadband usershave a TV very near them, or in the very same room where they connect to the Internet? Probably most of them. Why then did they choose to get their favorite TV shows from the Internet? The answer, according to a comment to the original article at TechCrunch is

(…) that people are taking far more control in their viewing habits, making the decision on their own time and not allowing themselves to be dictated to by broadcasters.

The average broadband penetration in Europe is 16%. This, coupled with the Motorola study results, means that about 7% Europeans have at least once watched TV online. It may not be much, certainly not as impressive as 45%, but broadband penetration keeps on growing. On top of this, projects like Joost, which just this week announced more major partnerships and $45 million in funding, might very soon help transform that 7% into something broadcasters and producers might not want to ignore.
