Immediate media: Everywhere, anywhere, whatever you choose

Day in and day out, there is a lot to organize, categorize, customize, manage and report on. And let’s not forget: a lot to be entertained and informed by. The postmodern world maybe lost it’s grand narratives, but it offers a lot of little ones. Welcome to the age of immediate media.
‘Our whole lives are about doing more in less time, trying to cram everything into 24 hours, in a day that is filled with constant interruptions. Instant messages, emails, and the constant chirping of cell phones have surely and slowly squeezed our attention spans.’
Om Malik writes in his article on the immediate media age. And the response of the stressed, time-hounded consumer? Customizing this endless stream of information, communication and entertainment. Choosing his own music. Subscribing to the news he wants to read, categorized in his own way. Watching his selection of television shows. Having a social life with people he likes. And all of this at the same time. We’ve all become hyperactive, multi-tasking managers of our own matters. News 24/7? So are we. And there are plenty of technologies that can help us with the improvement of our lives’ time/content ratio: Joost and PalTalk pave the way for Social Television, making it possible to watch a show and chat about it with your friends at the same time, through the same device. Also, mobile television makes its move into a bright future: the EU decided on a DVB- H as standard, and a deal made by Rok TV and Nokia is going to offer two news channel packages for download.
‘The more we connect, the more we want to know but in less time.’ Malik writes further on. What do we actually do with all the time we save? Categorizing our bookmarks? Or broadcasting ourselves?
You choose.
