It’s payback time: Monetizing User Generated Content

Posted in IPTV, Internet, Advertising, News on June 28th, 2007. By Maren Hermans.

‘Can User Generated Content (UCG) be monetized?’ A new study by Bear Stearns is asking (Via The Long Tail). ‘Yes.’ would be the answer of 20-year-old Brandon Fletcher, who just signed a revenue-sharing deal with YouTube for his online dating show. Also, young filmmakers Arin Crumley and Susan Buice are hoping for some money in order to pay their credit card debts. A deal with spout.com should help them to remunerate the production-costs for their 71-minutes feature film on YouTube. But companies do not trust so much user generated content, as they still prefer to focus on making money with professional video content. ‘Some investors remain skeptical that UGC is more than a passing fad’, Bear Stearns is reporting in their study. Google is one of the few trying to make money with UGC, but this, Liz Gannes is speculating in her article, can have it’s reason in their latest billion- investment, YouTube.
