The Onward March of Citizen Journalism

Every major news event from the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami has been recorded by Citizen Journalists and broadcasted by traditional media. The Beijing Olympics of 2008 could be the event that pushes the trend forward. The conditions are perfect for this to happen. Thousands of foreign visitors with mobile phones and cameras, a censorship plan in place and, at the same time, China’s government willing to make a good impression.

Meanwhile, back in the free press world, the Press Complaints Commission has sparkled, with it’s latest mobile phone footage ruling a debate on the best way to police this type of media on the Internet.

New Players Enter the DRM-Free Music Market

So far two major music labels — EMI Music and Universal Music Group — have decided to offer DRM free music. Others are still sitting on the fence for now. That hasn’t stopped new entrants from entering what is beginning to look like a very crowded market. (GigaOM Article)

Sony’s PlayTV turns the PS3 into a PVR

Sony announced several media related updates and add-ons to their gaming consoles, the PlayStation 3 and the PSP. Play TV, a hardware add on to their PlayStation 3 will allow users to watch, pause and record live HD TV to the PlayStation 3 hard drive. The contents can then be watched as in any other DVR or can be transferred to Sony’s mobile console, the PSP, to watch on the go. The PSP will also feature a new video pay-per-view download service, the “Go! Video Download Service”. Sony itself and Britain’s Sky Broadcasting will provide the contents.
