Mamoru Kano (Animation)

Mamoru Kano is a Visual Art Director at WOW, a Japanese creative production agency known for it’s high-quality TV commercials.
We first knew about Mamoru around ‘05 when his pioneer Quartz Compositions caught our eye. We almost didn’t know anything about Quartz back then, and 2 years later he’s still considered one of the best.
Quartz Composer is an Apple technology used to generate the animations of Macintosh apps. The visual solution to display Albums in iTunes is, for example, generated with Quartz.
This technology has a very unique work-space that allows to create very appealing images, playing with 2 and 3 dimensions, and even modifying the contents through RSS. What was more important for us when we knew about Quartz and Zuga was the fact that multiple different clips can be generated with no rendering or further video editing.
An amazing tool for TV contents that has not yet been exploited.
Using this technology, Zuga makes magic. His images breathe quality in levels we didn’t even consider before. There’s something about the elegance of the movements, the illustrations, colors, concepts. It could almost be called Motion Art, but it will never be comparable to Video Art.
There’s something distant, too conceptual about Zuga’s personal compositions. But at the same time they look naturally fascinating to the eye. Talking to a friend some weeks a go he assured Mamoru’s animations looked a lot like what a synesthesic can see.
