News Corp. and NBC Universal’s answer to YouTube: Hulu
Posted in IPTV, News on August 30th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
News Corp. and NBC Universal presented Hulu, the name of their online video joint venture and billion dollar startup. Hulu will feature free premium, professional content such as Family Guy, My name is Earl or The Office among many others. The name however, seems to have some translation issues.
News Corp. and NBC might feel that the success of YouTube is based, to a large extent, on the fact that it has been hosting copyrighted content owned by companies such as themselves. Because Hulu’s offer is focused on professional content they will not directly compete with YouTube as a non professional and viral video destination. Instead they want to become the legal alternative to free professional contents online.
The key to success for Hulu is to offer the customer a better and easier experience than what pirate alternatives already offer (with Bittorrent, for example) or might soon offer. As Michael Arrington points out in comment 13 of this article, Hulu’s success will probably depend on whether their focus is on becoming “the largest advertising platform on earth” or the best IPTV experience available, even if it includes ads.
