Of love, politics and money: YouTube and broadcast television
Posted in IPTV, Television, News on June 8th, 2007. By Maren Hermans.
In the exciting times of the starting love between broadcasting and Internet video services, it seems almost unromantic to make distinctions between them. But this is politics: the Audiovisual Media Services Without Frontiers from the European Commission divides linear (TV, Internet, Mobile) and non-linear media (video on demand, some video services via internet) and makes new regulations concerning product placement and advertising. In the case of YouTube it seems clear that `the services YouTube currently offers, as repeatedly said, do not fall under the definition of a linear or non-linear audiovisual service, as these are not TV or TV-like programs.’ , as said by European Commission Spokesman Martin Selmayr. This is particularly interesting if we look at the latest developments of YouTube and broadcast television: Russian’s Kremlin TV started airing on YouTube, accompanied by a Venezuelan TV channel, which in its country is prohibited out of political reasons. And where politics are, there is money not far: A new deal made by YouTube and Hearst- Argyle TV assures that local TV stations receive payment from YouTube if they are watched by users.
