Pattern Extravaganza (Design)

We see patterns while we eat, while we stare at the ocean or even while we walk the sidewalks of our town. Our eyes are used to graphic patterns, to that indefinite and continuous repetition of shapes and color combinations.
In a poetic way we could say that patterns keep the pieces of our visual life connected, like the never-ending pattern that buildings create along the streets even when we jump to a different neighborhood or city, or how colors in nature relax our eyes because of the different tones of green being connected in a gentle dance even when the green softly turns sky-blue, and the sky-blue softly turns city-grey.
Continuous patterns with very small variations “from one glance to the other” are in fact the base of cinema. According to the theory of persistence of vision, the illusion of motion results when a series of film images are displayed in quick succession.
But lets stick to printed patterns. The following are three of our favorite occidental pattern artists: Amy Butler, Karen Hall and Don Baker.
Amy Butler is a very well-know fabric designer. Her patterns are normally inspired by nature and rich textures of everyday life, and are specially pleasant to the eyes for her color selection.
Karen Hall of the Candeo Group is more of an illustrator, and the beautiful and unique thing of her patterns is that handmade look.
Finally, Don Baker is a freelance illustrator characterized by a playful use of shapes and a striking sense of color. Looking at his work, one feels a sense of motion that is curiously grounding.
