YouTube’s Newest Competition
Posted in IPTV, News on August 9th, 2007. By Eduard F. Vinyamata.
YouTube’s competition is coming from many fronts and in many ways, yet it still manages over 21% of all online video streams. Yahoo, while only having 4.6% of streams, recently stated that they are going to take on YouTube. See this NewTeeVee article for more details. Yahoo actually owns one of the most popular online photo sharing sites, Flickr. The fact that it’s been confirmed that Flickr will soon let users add video might indicate part of Yahoo’s strategy to catch up on YouTube’s leadership.
And what about Clown Co? The joint venture between NBC Universal and NewsCorp to become the end of Youtube (and which we wrote about before) still remains a project without a name or a website, despite having found motivated investors.
YouTube’s competition not only comes from future websites. Contents themselves are becoming, in certain cases, a field of competition. Take Lonelygirl15 for example. MySpace bought the rights to the exclusive finale. This article from Liz Gannes’ NewTeeVee explains how this unprecedented moved from Lonelygirl15’s producers could start empowering independent online content producers in interesting ways.
